Great Monitor

 April 30, 2013
By Victor W. Michnowicz
Another great Dell monitor. Came with a both a DVI and a mini display port to regular display port cable. The stand is also very nice and allows for easy adjustment of height and rotation. Works flawlessly with my late 2011 13″ MacBook Pro. With this monitor I am easily able to work with two windows side-by-side (Check out Flexiglass on the Mac App Store for a good window management tool).

– Update August 24, 2013 –

I purchased another Dell UltraSharp U2913WM to connect to a new 2013 MacBook Air 13″. Once I connected the monitor I noticed it looked terrible. Everything on the screen looked blurry and the colors were washed out. It turns out that some new Macs have problems with certain external monitors. Instead of sending an RBG signal to the monitor it sends a YCbCr one. I found a solution to this problem here: http://ireckon.net/2013/03/force-rgb-mode-in-mac-os-x-to-fix-the-picture-quality-of-an-external-monitor

After applying that override the monitor looks great.

Great Multi-tasking monitor and Alternative Multi-Screen setup

 July 13, 2013

This particular monitor is suited for a couple types of people.

The first type of person is the multi-tasker. Its very easy to modify the screen setup to display any number of windows with the included screen application.
Just pick you preference, One, two or up to six segmented screens. Simple and productive, particularly for reading two pages of text, multiple spreadsheets or two browser windows side by side.

The second type of person is the for the widescreen gamer / movie watcher or someone that does not have the desk real estate for multiple monitors.
This is viable alternative to having two screens side by side with no bezel in the middle.
The added advantage is with the vertical pixel reduction to 1080 over a 30 inch monitor running at 2560X1600 resolution is higher frame rates and lower overall graphics card requirements, but are still getting the extra wide view.

Color quality, options, and picture quality on this monitor are excellent.
Bezel gets an extra postive nod, as its nearly invisible.

The only real downside is dependent on the age of the application (or game) that you are running.
Some applications (pre-2005) cannot properly scaling image or interfaces for the 21:9 screen ratio (using the 2560 pixel horizontal width), leading to forced stretch of the image.
However, all is not lost. You just have to 1:1 scale the image and it will use 16:9 ratio perfectly at 1920X1080 (with black bars on the remaining portion of screen).

I run this particular monitor directly off my sager notebook docking station with no issues.
Remember to invest in a display port or mini-display port connector cable to run the full graphic level of performance at 2560X1080, as this is the easiest way to connect the monitor.

Overall recommended as a lower cost alternative to a 30″ screen with nearly the same level of performance.

A GREAT Monitor! Very Sharp, but get it up to the 2560X1080 to enjoy it fully!

This is a great monitor. It comes with a DVI, Display Port and mini Display port cables. Using it with Windows 7 and my HP 8440p Elite Book I’m able to get 2560×1080 only using the mini display port. The monitor is not a bigger 27" monitor, it’s more like two 17 monitors, side by side, built as one. There is a ton of real estate here and I can keep many windows open at the same time, all visible. The Dell Display Manager gives you 20 display configurations as well as a custom one. This is where you can preset defined window sizes. Then just drag a window into that space – it immediately expands to the predetermined size. I use it for complex designs with Microsoft Visio, e-mail, IM, and browsing with all windows open. This is a very wide monitor, great stand, great tilt, height, swivel and awesome resolution. It’s not an Apple Retina display, but it is fantastic for 1/2 the price. I’d make sure your PC Video Graphic driver is capable of 2560×1080 before you buy.

Just what I needed

As I type this, I am using the Picture-By-Picture feature on the monitor to watch TV while browsing. This monitor works great for that. I used to use the same option all the time on my 2405FPW before I wore out the PBP and input buttons on first the original and the replacement.

When the buttons on my second 2405fpw stopped working, I didn’t have money for a new IPS panel so I just bought a cheaper TN panel. The main things I missed were picture quality and the PBP feature. That monitor (I-INC 28″) died a few months ago so I did some looking around.

I loved my 2405FPW, and had a good experience when getting Dell to replace the original under warranty. So I wanted to go back to having one of their IPS monitors. I saw this monitor on sale and thought the extra wide screen and the PBP feature would be perfect for the way I multitask. PBP when I need it, and a seamless extra wide screen when I don’t unlike what would happen with a dual monitor setup.

Bioshock Infinite and other games that can run at full native res look great. and when I am using PBP for whatever reason, I just set the computer’s resolution to 1280×1024 so the display isn’t distorted.

This would have been an awesome monitor in 32"

Dell got almost everything right with this monitor, everything except its SIZE. If you are “upgrading” from a 27″ 16:9 monitor like I did, prepare for the shock of losing 2 full inches of vertical size! I measured it, image size is 11 1/4″ high. Now, you can move the OS menu bar from the bottom and make it vertical on one of the sides, that’ll get you some vertical estate back, and since the image quality is outstanding you can bring the monitor closer to you. But if you regularly use two applications at once, you will love the horizontal spread! Remember those 21″ flat screens that were still 4:3? It’s like having 2 of those glued seamlessly side by side. Color AND grayscale display is exquisite, and with the extensive controls you can fine-tune it to perfection if you are the purist type. In conclusion; when I took it out of the box I thought it was going back for sure… after playing with it for a couple of hours I decided it was a keeper.

excellent monitor

I previously had a pair of 19" standard format monitors and replaced them both with this one. So far it has been a much better experience than the setup I had previously. This monitor takes up much less real estate on my desktop, has fewer cables to deal with, and generates a lot less heat (due to led back lighting). Picture is sharp and there are no dead pixels that I can see. I use this monitor for work purposes, not for gaming/movies, so having the extra wide screen is a huge bonus.

Excellent monitor if you do a lot of work with multiple documents

This monitor has an amazing array of inputs, which allows me to connect it to my iMac (DVI-D) and a laptop (Display Port) and switch between computers (also includes VGA, mini display port and HDMI). Monitor comes with the DVI and Display Port cables, which is a huge bonus. Front panel has touch sensitive switches that are intuitive and easy to use. One improvement suggestion would be to make it easier to switch between inputs (currently requires five selections in the menus).

Excellent monitor with all the newest bells and whistles.

Excellent monitor for limited height area – the features are great, but if you have space I would go with the 30 inch. The displayport daisy-chaining feature is very nice!

Fantastic monitor – but check your video card capability.

Stunning monitor. Not only tilt, but also vertical height adjustment. Now I realize how important this is.

I was not able to achieve the suggested resolution via DVI. Only via DP. (I don’t have HDMI on my video card, so I cannot comment). Dell technical support had no knowledge of this issue as product is very new.

Bottom line – if you have DP connection – you will absolutely love this monitor. It is substantially better than 2 x 24" screens I have.
